SXSW Music Festival
We have hosted multiple music showcases at SXSW and found that the key to massive attendance at SXSW is to book a large portion of local Austin artists in addition to the “buzz” regional acts… never turn your back on the local crowd. SXSW has a very focused target demographic consisting almost entirely of Independent Musicians and the music industry tastemaker.
Clients: U-Haul, Red Roof Inns, Yak Pak, Spaten, Cocaine Energy, Bob Tulipan.
About the festival:
SXSW Music is one of the largest music festivals in the United States, with more than 2,000 performers playing in more than 90 venues around downtown Austin over four days, in March. Though it is an industry-based event, SXSW Music links locally with events such as the annual Austin Music Awards show and Heart of Texas Rock Fest. SXSW Music also offers free musical samples of featured artists at each festival. The number of songs has grown from 775 MP3 tracks in 2005 to 1,267 in 2009.
Similarly, SXSW Interactive has attracted a strong following among web creators and entrepreneurs. Its focus on emerging technology has earned the festival a reputation as a breeding ground for new ideas and creative technologies. According to festival co-organizer Louis Black, SXSW Interactive “has probably been the biggest of its kind in the world” since 2007.
The music event has grown from 700 registrants in 1987 to nearly 12,000 registrants. SXSW Film and SXSW Interactive events have grown every year, most recently bringing around 15,000 to 20,000 registrants to Austin every March
Midpoint Music Festival
About the festival:
Cincinnati’s MidPoint Music Festival has developed a reputation as the place to find the next big thing. Many of last year’s performers made year-end lists for Best Album or Best New Artist in major music publications such as Spin, Fader, Pitchfork, NME, Filter and Rolling Stone.
The list of recent MPMF performers includes Best Coast, Phantogram, Surfer Blood, Caribou, A Place to Bury Strangers, Holy F*ck, Fang Island, +/-, Colour Revolt, Cults, Candy Claws, Brighton MA, Drink Up Buttercup, The Strange Boys, Felice Brothers, Javelin, Heartless Bastards, The Do, Chairlift, Micachu and the Shapes, Sarah Borges, Bob Pollard, Wussy and Buffalo Killers.
Attendance has grown along with the buzz, jumping from 13,500 in 2008 to 20,000 last year. Sales of three-day MPMF wristbands were up significantly last year, and overall box office receipts have increased 27 percent since 2008.
As for the buzz, the MPMF.com web site received 361,000 page views Feb. 1-Oct. 1, 2010, an increase of 37 percent over the same period the year before. The site had 169,000 page views in September 2010 alone.
